About this Course

This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for intermediate English learners. Topics covered include paraphrasing, written argument, and academic writing skills.

Course Objectives

5.RW.1 Identify the meaning of words using context clues.

5.RW.2 Identify and produce counterarguments and refutations in simple essays.

5.RW.3 Identify strong and weak arguments.

5.RW.4 Produce paraphrases of short passages using basic citation.

5.RW.5 Produce a 5-paragraph opinion essay with a logical counterargument and refutation, a variety of compound and

complex sentences, and transition words.

  • week 2
    • (EAW2) Students dentified parts of an argumentative essay. Practiced writing Hooks.

    • Students researched and selected an Argumentative Essay topic and researched articles (links).

    • Students wrote the Introduction paragraph draft including a hook, background info., and thesis statement. Revised and edited.

    • Thesis Practice: Students used a selected topic and support points to write a thesis statement.

    • Quiz: Identifying Weak vs. Strong Arguments

    • Students wrote Body Paragraphs 1&2 including a topic and support sentences. Revised and Edited.

  • week 3
    • ESL Library Reading: Students identified in-context vocabulary in a reading and answered comprehension questions which used passive verbs.

    • Counter-Argument and Refutation Practice: Students identified the CA and REF in sentences.

    • Students rewrote Body paragraph 3 with revisions and edits.

    • Arguementative Essay: Students wrote Body Paragraph 3 draft including the Counter-Argument and Refutation. Students revised and edited.

    • Students wrote and revised the Conclusion Paragraph, including a thesis restatement and final commments.

    • Argumentative Essay: Final Draft Due

  • week 4
    • Study Guides: Students completed and reviewed Level 5 Reading/Writing objectives.

    • Reading: Students read ESL Library "Panama Canal" and complete the vocabulary in context and comprehension questions.

    • Vocabulary in Context: Grouped students determined the general meaning of words used in sentences and discussed the cues that helped them.

    • Students completed and reviewed the Study Guide.

    • Final Exam
