About this Course

This course focuses on basic English communication skills for beginning English learners. Topics covered include presentations and applications for asking and answering questions.

Course Objectives

3.LS.1 Identify and verbally produce statements of fact and opinion.

3.LS.2 Take notes from a variety of sources using various graphic organizers.

3.LS.3 Deliver a planned presentation on class topics.

3.LS.4 Deliver an impromptu presentation on class topics.

Learning modules

  • Week 1
    • L3/4 Ss interviewed a partner, took notes, and reported on the details.

    • L3/4 Students listened to an oral text, took notes on a T chart identifying facts and opinions.

    • L3/4 Students listened to a short news program andtook notes for discussion of the main idea and details.

  • Week 2
    • L3/4 QSkills 1 Unit 2: Students identified vocbulary and listened for main ideas and details.

    • L3/4 Students listened to news clips and took notes on the main ideas, facts, and opinions.

    • L3/4 Students reported on a news clip using notes to describe facts and opinions.

    • L3/4 Grouped students discuss questions on a handout about "Cultures" and restate information to other groups.

    • L3/4 Students filled out a cluster chart on various parts of their culture.

  • Week 3
    • L3/4 Paired students chose impromptu topics, planned 3 points, and gave impromptu speeches.

    • L3/4 Impromptu Speaking Quiz

    • L3/4 Ss practice preparing and presenting impromptu speeches.

    • L4 Students listened to 2 oral texts, took notes, and discussed the similarities and differences.

    • L3 Students asked and answered questions about selected photos using specific tenses.

  • Week 4
    • L3/4 Presentations on student cultures with PowerPoint

    • L4 Students practiced listening to 2 oral texts, notetaking, and discussing similarities and differences.

    • L3 Students practiced listening to an oral text, taking notes on facts and opinions, and responding with an opinion about the topic.

    • L3/4 Students practiced listening to oral texts and notetaking.

    • L3 Final Exam

    • L4 Final Exam

    • L3/4 Students practice listening, notetaking and reporting.
