About this Course

This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for beginning English learners. Topics covered include facts and opinions, brainstorming, and academic writing skills.

Course Objectives

3.RW.1 Produce writing plans using graphic organizers.

3.RW.2 Identify facts and opinions within a paragraph.

3.RW.3 Identify main ideas and distinguish from supporting details in short passages.

3.RW.4 Produce descriptive and opinion paragraphs that include topic sentences, detailed supporting sentences, effective

transitions, concluding sentences, and proper punctuation and capitalization.

Learning modules

  • Week 1
    • L3/4 Students interviewed a partner, took notes, and wrote a descriptive paragraph about the classmate. Discussed revisions and edits.

    • L3/4 Read ESL Library articles, completed vocabulary exercises, and responded to comprehension questions.

    • Ss rewrote their descriptive paragraphs with correct format and revisions.

  • Week 2
    • L3/4 Students wrote a descriptive paragraph focusing on the 3 parts of a paragraph.

    • L3 Students read an ESL Library article and highlighted facts vs. opinions. Students also answered comprehension questions using simple past verbs.

    • L4 Students reviewed and wrote sentences using level adjectives with antonyms and synonyms.

    • L4 EAW2: Students practiced identifying topics and controlling ideas and supporting sentences in a paragraph.

    • L3/4 Students practice and produce topic sentences and identify support sentences using supplemental worksheets.

    • L3 Writing; Students wrote a descriptive paragraph using good formatting and parts. They revised and edited their paragraphs.

    • L4 Writing: Students wrote a 4 paragraph essay using good formatting and parts.

    • L3/4 Students identified and wrote concluding sentences for a paragraph.

  • Week 3
    • L3 Students read a short story and identified all of the Simple Past verbs.

    • L4 Students read "The Panama Canal" and identified vocabulary i- context and anwered T/F and Comprehension questions.

    • L3 Ss wrote an opinion paragraph using ideas from a planned graphic organizer.

    • L3 Ss wrote the final draft of an opinion paragraph.

    • L4 Ss prepared an outline for an opinion essay.

    • L4 Writing Exam: Ss wrote an opinion essay using an outline.

    • L3 Students rewrote the final draft of an opinion paragraph about their country.

    • L3/4 Students practiced identifying meanings and using the correct transitional word(s) in sentences.

    • L4 Students wrote adjectivies with synonyms and antonyms.

  • Week 4
    • L4 Students wrote the final draft of the opinion essay about big cities.

    • L4 Students wrote sentences using target adjectives with syn/ant.

    • L3/4 Students wrote and read a "Finish the Story".

    • L4 Final Exam

    • L3/4 Students completed and corrected their Study Guides.
