About this Course

This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for intermediate English learners. Topics covered include paraphrasing, written argument, and academic writing skills.

5.RW.1 Identify the meaning of words using context clues.

5.RW.2 Identify and produce counterarguments and refutations in simple essays.

5.RW.3 Identify strong and weak arguments.

5.RW.4 Produce paraphrases of short passages using basic citation.

5.RW.5 Produce a 5-paragraph opinion essay with a logical counterargument and refutation, a variety of compound and

complex sentences, and transition words.

6.RW.1 Identify and employ methods used for avoiding plagiarism.

6.RW.2 Produce compound sentences with various conjunctions in pieces of writing.

6.RW.3 Produce proper citations and a Works Cited/ References page in MLA and/or APA style.

6.RW.4 Produce a 4-5 paragraph timed writing.

6.RW.5 Produce a 1‐2-page piece of academic writing using outside sources and proper citation.

  • Week 1
    • L5/6 Students reviewed essay organization and produced Cluster Chart Brainstorming on a topic.

    • L5/6 Students wrote Introduction and Body 1&2 of an opinion essay.

    • L5/6 Students wrote the conclusion of the opinion essay, revised, and edited.

    • L5/6 Students completed the final draft of the opinion essay.

  • Week 2
    • L5/6 Students practiced writing persuasive hooks and thesis statements.

    • L5/6 Students researched topics and sources for an argumentative essay and research paper.

    • L5/6 Students researched and brainstormed 3 arguments for their essays/researh papers.

    • Students attended an interactive UCO library presentation about MLA documentation style and formatting.

    • L5/6 Paraphrasing Quiz

    • L5/6 Students completed introduction and Body 1&2 of their argumentative essays/research papers.

    • L5/6 Students practiced identifying and writing good paraphrases.

  • Week 3
    • L5/6 Students reviewed MLA formatting and added in-text citations to the Argumentative Essay and Research Papers

    • L5/6 Students completed, revised, and edited the Counter/Arguement and Refutation paragraphs for their essays.

    • Students completed, revised, and edited Body 1&2.

    • L5 Students complete essay/research drafts.

    • L5/6 Students corrected and/or added documentation to essay/research in-text citations.

  • Week 4
    • L5/6 Final Drafts with documentation and revisions.

    • L5/6 Students completed the level Study Guide for reveiw.

    • L5/6 Paired students practiced identifying general meanings of new words in context.

    • L5/6 Students completed and reviewed their Study Guide.

    • L5/6 Students read ESL Library article and completed vocabulary in-context and article details.

    • L6 Students completed timed 4-paragraph essay "What are your reasons for studying abroad?"
