About this Course

This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for intermediate English learners. Topics covered include plagiarism, formatting and citation, and timed writing skills. This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for high-intermediate/low-advanced English learners. Topics covered include timed writing, working with academic sources, and citation.

6.RW.1 Identify and employ methods used for avoiding plagiarism.

6.RW.2 Produce compound sentences with various conjunctions in pieces of writing.

6.RW.3 Produce proper citations and a Works Cited/ References page in MLA and/or APA style.

6.RW.4 Produce a 4-5 paragraph timed writing.

6.RW.5 Produce a 1‐2-page piece of academic writing using outside sources and proper citation.

7.RW.1 Identify and cite effective resources for use in academic or professional essays by evaluating bias, purpose, and

author’s stance.

7.RW.2 Respond to questions about academic material from sources.

7.RW.3 Produce proper in-text citation for summaries, paraphrases, and quotations.

7.RW.4 Produce a 5-paragraph timed writing with details and examples.

7.RW.5 Produce a 2-page piece of academic writing using 2+ outside sources and proper citation.

  • Week 2
    • L6/7 Students attended a UCO library presentation on locating sources in the library followed by checking them out.

    • L6/7 Students produced a Works Cited page for their research papers and read and discussed an article in EAW3 Unit 4 about Plagiarism.

    • Research: Students continued source research and added to their Works Cited page.

    • L6/7 Brainstorming: Students wrote their thesis statements and prepared a T chart with pros and cons.

    • Students produced an introduction for their papers.

    • Plagiarism Quiz: Quoting/Paraphrasing/Summarizing

  • Week 3
    • Students completed, revised, and edited Body 1 of research papers.

    • Students reviewed and practiced the 4 types of sentences(s, cp, cx, cpcx).

    • Body Argument 2/3: Students competed Body 2/3 with counter arguments/concessions/refutations for reveiw.

    • Students completed their level Study Guides for review.

    • Research paper final draft submitted with Works Cited and documentation.

  • Week 4
    • L6/7 Students brainstormed and wrote a timed-essay using level appropriate COR worksheets.

    • L6/7 Students reviewed their leveled Study Guides in preparation for the final exams.

    • L7 Final Exam

    • Grouped students corrected and reviewed leveled Study Guides.

    • L6 Final Exam
