About this Course

This course focuses on basic English reading and writing skills for beginning English learners. Topics covered include facts and opinions, brainstorming, and academic writing skills.

3.RW.1 Produce writing plans using graphic organizers.

3.RW.2 Identify facts and opinions within a paragraph.

3.RW.3 Identify main ideas and distinguish from supporting details in short passages.

3.RW.4 Produce descriptive and opinion paragraphs that include topic sentences, detailed supporting sentences, effective

transitions, concluding sentences, and proper punctuation and capitalization.

Learning modules

  • Week 1
    • Student interviewed a new classmate, took notes, brainstormed, and wrote a descriptive paragraph about their new friend.

    • Students read ESL Library "The Empire State Building" and answered comprehension questions.

    • Students reviewed and practiced identifying and producing topic sentences and supporting sentences.

    • Quiz: Topic and controlling ideas and support details

  • Week 2
    • Students practiced writing concluding senentences plus correcting run-on sentences.

    • Students brainstormed using a graphic organizer and wrote a descriptive paragraph using adjectives and transitional words.

    • Students revised and rewrote a final draft of their descriptive paragraphs.

    • Paired students read ESL Library David Beckham and completed the exercises.

    • Students read and discussed ESL "Family' vocabulary and family relationships.

    • Students identified Fact/Opinion sentences and wrote about both on selected topics.

    • ESL Vocabulary Quiz: The Family

    • Students discussed opinion topics, chose one, and completed a T chart with pros and cons for an opinion paragraph.

  • Week 3
    • Students wrote, revised, and edited a first draft opinion paragraph on a selected topic.

    • Students rewrote a final draft of their opinion paragraph.

    • (EAW Intro) Students practiced exercises to improve writing skills.

    • Students produced a graphic organizer and wrote the first draft of an opinion paragraph on the Advantages or Disadvantages of living in a city.

    • EAW Intro: Completed Chapter 8 review using writing skills.

    • Students rewrote the final draft of an opinion paragraph with revisions and edits.

    • Students read ESL Library "Marilyn Monroe" and identified and labled facts and opinions.

  • Week 4
    • Students completed and reviewed the Study Guide.

    • Students reviewed for the Final Exam.

    • Final Exam
