About this Course

This course focuses on basic English communication skills for advanced English learners. Topics covered include impromptu speaking activities and the delivery of a planned presentation that includes source content with proper citations.

Learning modules

  • Week 1
    • L8 Paraphrase; L9 Summarize Video: "How to speak so that people will want to listen" You Tube

    • L8/9 Activity 1; L8 demonstrate active listening; L9 Discussion, Amy Tan Quotation followed by two activities

    • Quotations (Activity 3) L8 determine 1 synonym for each word; L9 Demonstrate words in sentences (round robin)

    • L8/L9 On Your Own: 24 hr. OBSERVATION: prepare to share observations with class (Preparation below)

    • L8 Share 2 OR 3; L9 Share 3 observations of others communicating: (2 minutes) see guidelines

    • CLASS GUIDELINES L8 AND L9 Think/Pair/Share list of 5 important rules to follow which will help you have pleasant conversations in this class.

    • Vocabulary: create sentences for vocabulary words and include one quotation that you spoke about and liked

    • L8/L9 Video 4 types of communication (Self-reflect-Which style is most like you?) L9 How ca you compensate for other styles?

  • Week 2
    • L8 and L9 Warm-up with partner/vocabulary review

    • REVIEW: How to pronounce 'ed' at the end of a verb: Think/Pair/Share

    • Quiz over vocabulary; Individual will share quote with class and why it had meaning to him/her 1 min.)

    • SEE EYE TO EYE Dialogue wit Idioms

    • Review Idioms from "See Eye to Eye" dialogue

    • Brainstorm Presentation topics with theme: "Living and Learning in Texas: Advice Presentation for November RSAF Arrivals"

    • Review Rubric and begin Presentation Preparations

  • Week 3
    • Being Home (Quotations and new vocabulary)

    • Paraphrase Sam Glenn's Airplane Story

    • Review 13 quotations to be discussed with partner. Choose your 5 favorites and be able to explain.

    • Sayings (Discussion about what the sayings and proverbs mean) Think/Pair/Share

    • 13 quotations page 9 (Partners choose 5 most important, relevant, or meaningful quotations) Rank 1-5

    • Presentation video suggestions for additional info. (homesickness/advice/job competition/cultural differences)

    • Wed Aug. 31/Thurs. Sept. 1 (Computer Lab) Completing Presentations focus Works Cited/Peer Evals.

  • Week 4
    • Final Impromptu presentation: Brainstorm solution to a problem and deliver a presentation

    • 09/01 AND 09/06 5 to 7 minute planned presentation with electronic visuals and proper citations-TECHNOLOGICAL/ORGANIZATION Advice for new RSAF

    • Airline pilots fall asleep instead of landing (videos) 2 facts you did not know from each video (Partner->Group)

    • Comprehension exercise: replace synonyms with definitions and reread the story; rewrite 5 assigned sentences
